چکیده

The Advanced Composition Explorer was launched August 25, 1997 carrying six high resolution spectrometers that measure the elemental, isotopic, and ionic charge state composition of nuclei from H to Ni (1 Z 28) from solar wind energies ( 1 keV/nuc) to galactic cosmic ray energies ( 500 MeV/nuc). Data from these instruments is being used to measure and compare the elemental and isotopic composition of the solar corona, the nearby interstellar medium, and the Galaxy, and to study particle acceleration processes that occur in a wide range of environments. ACE also carries three instruments that provide the heliospheric context for ion composition studies by monitoring the state of the interplanetary medium. From its orbit about the Sun-Earth libration point 1.5 million km sunward of Earth, ACE also provides real-time solar wind measurements to NOAA for use in forecasting space weather. This paper provides an introduction to the ACE mission, including overviews of the scientific goals and objectives, the instrument payload, and the spacecraft and ground systems.

New Views of Solar Energetic Particles From The Advanced Composition Explorer

Abstract. Since its launch in August 1997, the Advanced Composition Explorer has been measuring the elemental, isotopic, and ionic charge-state composition of solar energetic particles with three new, high-resolution instruments (SEPICA, SIS, and ULEIS). These studies span the energy range from -20 keV/nucleon to > 100 MeV/nucleon, and include elements from He to Ni (2 < Z < 28). This paper rev...

Isotopic composition of cosmic-ray sources

We use the GALPROP code and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) data to derive the cosmic ray (CR) isotopic composition at the sources. The composition is derived for two propagation models, diffusive reacceleration and plain diffusion. We show that the compositions derived assuming these two propagation models are different. We also compare the isotopic composition at the sources with the ...

Charge States of Solar Energetic Iron: Nonequilibrium Calculation with Shock-induced Acceleration

Observed charge states of solar energetic ions by Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer and Advanced Composition Explorer from recent large solar events in 1992 and 1997 show an energy-dependent feature that apparently has not been seen in earlier events, e.g., in 1978–1979. The mean charge state of iron, and to a lesser extent other heavy ions, was observed to increase with en...

Intermittency and the passive nature of the magnitude of the magnetic field.

It is shown that the statistical properties of the magnitude of the magnetic field in turbulent electrically conducting media resemble, in the inertial range, those of passive scalars in fully developed three-dimensional fluid turbulence. This conclusion, suggested by the data from the Advanced Composition Explorer, is supported by a brief analysis of the appropriate magnetohydrodynamic equations.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Persistent energetic He in the inner heliosphere

Using data from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer on NASA’s Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft we have examined the time and energy dependence of the quiet-time 5–15 MeV/nuc He intensity from 1998 through 2006 in order to establish the origin of these particles. We find a mixed population, with He from impulsive solar energetic particle events dominating at the lower end of this energy inter...
